Our Approach/Philosophy

We believe that, by empowering students with learning, intellectual, and developmental disabilities to pursue higher education, everyone wins. Not only do the students enrolled in our programs have increased independence and improved job opportunities, but it helps parents, educators, and other students on campus embrace the capabilities of students with disabilities.

The IHECP offers a continuum of individualized programs, each designed to support students in college-level learning while also adapting to their specific strengths and limitations. Colleges and universities do not offer the same support systems for students with learning disabilities as public high schools do, which is why we provide IHECP students who want the opportunity to learn on campus the academic, organization, planning, communication and social supports they need.

Using Masters-level educators, we are able to guide students with learning, intellectual, and developmental disabilities through college-level coursework. We also work with students to identify their strengths to help them pursue other courses or interests.

University students are selected to serve as peer mentors. These mentors assist IHECP students with coursework and help them become fully integrated into the college community.

Most of all, our goal is to work with students to foster confidence, independence, and encourage them to continue becoming the best version of themselves in a supported college setting. While previous generations of students with disabilities may not have had access to this level of higher education, we believe the tide is turning and that eligible students will be able to pursue the education they need to be confident, happy, and successful in life.
