Greg Root- 2019 Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Award Recipient

Greg Root, Assistant Director of the Student Access Center, has been actively working and advocating for the disability community for decades. When he was in elementary school himself, Greg struggled to keep up. Of course, at the time, conditions like dyslexia weren’t widely known or diagnosed. Like many students of his generation, Greg wasn’t officially informed of his condition until he was 35. But out of his experience in the K-12 system, he formed a passion for teaching. He especially credits his sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Rollins, who he says “tapped into my strengths and supported me.”

So, after graduating from high school, Greg went to college to become an educator. He graduated in 1972 with a degree in education and began his teaching career in a 6th grade classroom. He moved to fourth grade and then eventually into a special education program. This led Greg to explore additional certifications and graduate degrees to better serve these students, including those with emotional and behavioral disorders and learning disabilities.

In 1998, he retired from teaching after 27 years and moved to Florida. For 5 years, Greg worked in medical management before eventually moving to Colorado in 2003. Here, he became an administrative assistant to the Dean of Special Studies, which eventually led to his current work in the Student Access Center.

“When this position opened up in 2005,” Greg said, “it was perfect for someone with K-12 experience. That experience would allow them to help students who were looking for transition to higher ed, and so it was sort of a natural fit.” For the past 14 years, Greg has served students with disabilities in the Access Center, and has been a staunch advocate for access and inclusion on campus. After so many years of service, though, Greg is retiring from MSU Denver in September 2019.

But that’s not all he wrote. Greg is now joining IHECP as a Board Member — and we couldn’t be more excited to have him.
